Insect Brain System Knows What You Want

The goal for a lot of tech companies today: figure out what you, their customer, want next, before you even ask. It’s driven by something called similarity search.

"If you go to Y*Tube and you watch a video they’re going to suggest similar videos to the one you’re watching. That’s similarity search. If you go to Amazon and look for similar products to the one you’re going to buy, that’s similarity search."

“如果你上Y*Tube看一个视频的话,接下来它们会推荐你更多类似视频。这就是类似搜索。如果你上亚马逊找一样你要买的类似产品,那么这种情况就是类似搜索。”

Saket Navlakha, a computer scientist at the Salk Institute. He says we do similarity searches too, for example, when we scan faces in a crowd for the one we know. And even fruit files do a version, related to smell:

萨克生物研究学院电脑科学家,Saket Navlakha说,我们也做类似搜索,例如说,你可以在人群中,扫描这些人的脸面找到你所认识的那个人。甚至是水果也有一个版本,它与气味相关:

"So the fly is having to solve a similar problem, of kind of searching through its database of previous experiences and previous odors it has smelled, to determine what should be the most appropriate behavioral response to that odor."

“因此,蝇子就面临着解开一个类似的难题,类似这样的搜索,即通过自身先前的经历和已经闻过的气味来决定什么应该是对那种气味的最符合的行为反应。”

But flies tag incoming odors differently from the way modern search algorithms parse similarity. A small group of neurons makes an initial evaluation of the smell. Then a much larger set of neurons is activated to make a final decision about the smell. Rather than the way a computer similarity search does it, taking something with many dimensions, and simplifying it down to a few.

So Navlakha and his colleagues tweaked computer similarity search functions to do it fly style. And then pitted the fly-inspired algorithms against conventional ones. And the biologically inspired code won out, better at telling ’like’ from ’unlike’ on an image-similarity test.

"You know evolution figured it out, it figured out a very elegant solution to this very important problem." The report is in the journal Science.

Navlakha says he and his team are looking to partner with tech companies now, in hopes of endowing machines with the time-tested problem-solving abilities of the brain. Even if it’s a fruit fly brain.

What is it like being a film star? What’s it like in front of the camera? Students from Steamboat Springs Middle School in the US could tell you exactly what it’s like. They recently got a taste of the life of a star.

A local movie company decided to produce a film. All the actors in this film were to be students. Fourteen students were chosen from the school. The film, called Ruby vs Wolfgang, was based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood (《小红帽》)。 It came with a twist (改变), however – the story was told from the perspective (看法) of the wolf.

Zoe Walsh, a seventh-grader, signed up to do behind-the-scenes work. But she soon found herself in front of the camera instead. She played a strange middle school student in the film.

“It’s just fun,” she told the Steamboat Today. “Just pretending (假装) that you’re someone else.”

But there were also difficulties. It was very cold during shooting. Students had to put up with snow and icy wind.

Lack (缺乏) of experience was another problem. The director Michael Staley said he tried to “help each student bring out the wolf – or whatever animal they were representing – in themselves”。

Erus Harrington, an eighth-grader, said he played a “nice, silly British guy”。 He learned the British accent (口音) all on his own.

“I just kind of taught myself how to do it by watching videos,” he said. “It makes me feel good after I do it because I’m proud of myself.”

The students will watch themselves on the big screen for the first time during the film festival at a local high school in May.

“I’m probably going to laugh at myself,” said Zach Walsh, the brother of Zoe.

Thousands of years ago, people didn’t know that the Earth moved. They thought the sun really did move across the sky. The Greek god Helios was said to drive the sun around the sky with his chariot (战车)。 But now, these ideas have all changed. Nowadays, it is the sun that drives our “chariot” around the sky.

So what does all this mean? Well, quite simply, there is now a plane (or “chariot”) that is powered by the sun. It has special parts in its wings. These parts absorb power from the sun. They absorb so much power that they can carry on flying at night. In the Greek myths, Helios had to take a break at night. It seems we’re finally even more efficient than the gods themselves.

This plane is called Solar Impulse (“太阳驱动”号)。 It will fly across the US in May. This is very important for the future of the world.

So why is solar energy so good for us? Well, other kinds of energy cause a few problems. If you live in China, you’ve probably noticed the pollution. This is caused by burning coal or gas to make energy. The heat and chemicals (化学制品) from this make things work. But if we use the heat from the sun, we don’t have to burn anything, and there’s no pollution.

Solar energy is not all there yet. It needs to be improved. But the best thing about it is that, unlike coal and gas, it doesn’t run out. Solar Impulse could pretty much keep flying forever. Well, actually, the sun will run out too, one day, but not for another 5 billion years. That’s a pretty long flight.

How to Improve Your Study Habits

Want to know how to improve your grades without having to spend more time studying? Sounds too good to be true? Well, read on.。.

How to Improve Your Study Habits

Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. You do well enough in school, but you probably think you will never be a top student. This is not ne www.baihuawen.cn cessarily the case, however. You can receive better grades if you want to. Yes, even students of average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here's how:

1、 Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule or chart of your time. Fill in committed time such as eating, sleeping, meetings, classes, etc. Then decide on good, regular times for studying. Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments. Of course, studying shouldn't occupy all of the free time on the schedule. It's important to set aside time for relaxation, hobbies, and entertainment as well. This weekly schedule may not solve all of your problems, but it will make you more aware of how you spend your time. Furthermore, it will enable you to plan your activities so that you have adequate time for both work and play.

2、 Find a good place to study. Choose one place for your study area. It may be a desk or a chair at home or in the school library, but it should be comfortable, and it should not have distractions. When you begin to work, you should be able to concentrate on the subject.

3、 Skim before you read. This means looking over a passage quickly before you begin to read it more carefully. As you preview the material, you get some idea of the content and how it is organized. Later when you begin to read you will recognize less important material and you may skip some of these portions. Skimming helps double your reading speed and improves your comprehension as well.

4、 Make good use of your time in class. Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Sit where you can see and hear well. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.

5、 Study regularly. Go over your notes as soon as you can after class. Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused about. Read about these points in your textbook. If you know what the teacher will discuss the next day, skim and read that material too. This will help you understand the next class. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular review leads to improved performance on test.

6、 Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't worry excessively about a single test. Tests provide grades, but they also let you know what you need to spend more time studying, and they help make your knowledge permanent.

There are other techniques that might help you with your studying. Only a few have been mentioned here. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these. Talk with your classmates about their study techniques. Share with them some of the techniques you have found to be helpful. Improving your study habits will improve your grades.

If you're trying to lose weight at this moment in time, then you might well be struggling with the winter months. Most of us find that our mood is generally lower during the winter. We experience more colds and coughs, more extreme weather, and drink more warm drinks. All of this means that we're likely to put weight on which is never good news when thinking about our diet. Luckily, there are things that you can

do to try and minimize the effects of the weather this winter, and perhaps even lose weight instead of gaining it.

1、 Sort out your mood.

If you suffer from depression, then winter might mean that it is more obvious that there is something wrong with your mood. When we're depressed, it makes us more likely to feel the need to comfort eat, and this can be hugely detrimental to our diets when we're trying to lose weight. You should think about the things in your life that are making you stressed, and see what you can do to try and change that. If you are feeling down about your work load, then why not try talking to your boss and see if there is anyone else within your department who might be able to take on some of the work that you're struggling with

2、 Keep up regular exercise.

You need to do this, or your body will become unfit again and it will be a struggle when you get back to the summer months. In addition to this, exercise improves our mood and also speeds up our blood circulation and this means that we will be able to keep a lot warmer. This can cheer us up, and can stop us from feeling as though we need to eat comfort food during this time.

3、 Save money on your heating.

It can't have escaped your attention that heating your home is very expensive these days. Luckily, if your body needs to heat up more, you will burn more calories, so this might mean that it is actually better for you if you should choose to turn the heating down a couple of degrees.

4、 Buy healthy foods.

Instead of stocking up on chocolate and sweets, why not stock up on fruit insteadThings such as nuts and rasins can be yummy, but won't have as much of an effect on your waistband as chocolate might have done. You could always try salted vegetable crisps, too, if you are a savoury kind of person, as these are much better for

you than other brands of crisps that you might be a little bit addicted to at this moment in time.

Swiss zoos are accepting unwanted pet ’donations’ and FEEDING them to tigers and other carnivores

Swiss zoos are reportedly accepting unwanted pets which are killed and then fed to large carnivores such as tigers.

At the Zurich Zoo, rabbits, guinea pigs and rats are given to the carnivores to eat, according to Swiss local media.

Zoo director Alex Ruebel, who revealed this happens around six times a year, said: ’The guinea pigs or rabbits are killed by a veterinarian, then fed to the tigers, lions and snow leopards.’

The zoo director also said that mice are given to the zoo’s owls. Other animals such as dogs are however denied by the zoo.

According to Ruebel, the pets are not cut up into pieces but are fed in their entirety to the zoo’s carnivores.

He said: ’The reason for this is that we want to show what is natural. And carnivores eat meat together with the entrails.’

Ruebel said that some desperate pet owners even smuggle their pet inside the zoo where they release them inside an indoor rain forest.

However, not all Swiss zoos accept pets.

Spokesman Valentin Kressler of the Basel Zoo said: ’We do not accept such animals, as we do not know their health status.’

Swiss animal protection NGOs are shocked by the number of pets being offered to zoos.

Helen Sandmeier of Swiss Animal Protection said: ’It is not possible that one accepts the death of their pet.’

Sandmeier said that when buying a pet, you automatically take on the responsibility of caring for the animal, which includes giving it a good new place when someone can no longer take care of it.

Antoine Goetschel, founder of Global Animal Law, also blasted the ’predominant throwaway mentality’ of many pet owners.

However, both Goetschel and Sandmeier showed some understanding for the zoos.

Goetschel said: ’If they would openly offer the acceptance of pets, they would become a shelter for unwanted pets.’

You are a angel to see my folks. I told you my mom didn't hate your guts. Well, you know any more. You are standing in my fort where I did all my big thinking. This is where I stood thinking about you after the very first time we met. You didn't look real to me at first. I never saw so many colors on one girl before.。.but you looked like you belonged out there all right. You and all your colors. Do you remember the first thing you ever said to me"I'm lost" oh, you didn't look lost, not to me. You're grand.。. At first, the no-talking thing didn't last. Before long, I couldn't get you to shut up. But you were so cute, trying to impress me with William Blake and all your grand plans. I had no idea what you were talking about but I couldn't help loving the way you talked. I didn't have a clue, actually. I loved you right then and there.
