Inorder to make more contributions to the society and, at the same time, satisfymy keen interest in science, I am looking forward to beginning my graduatestudy. I plan to study for Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Case Western ReserveUniversity with special interests in metabolism, macromolecular synthesis, andprotein crystal growth. I have had plentiful preparations. First, when being anundergraduate in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University,I got very extensive and intensive education. I took many courses on chemistryand the related subjects, and earned high scores for most of them. Second, mymajor, Polymer, can be put into good use in Biochemistry programs becausePolymer is closely related with biological Macromolecule. Third, I have workingexperience that enriches my theory and laboratory skills.

都说逆境让人成长，逆境能够锻炼一个人耐挫、抗压等各方面的能力，也能够展现出一个学生面对困难、独当一面的品质。于是这类的文章，在申请文书中也日趋流行起来。笔者在和众多前招生官们交流之后，真心想提醒大家，下笔前要仔细想一想，你写的真的是逆境吗？
有一次，我和约翰霍普金森的前招生官Dana交流她在招生办时读到的印象最深刻的文章。其中一篇文章是，一个学生讲述自己在一个大风天打高尔夫球的故事。请注意不是拂面的微风，也不是一般的大风，而是很强很强的大风。但他恪守对高尔夫教练的，顶着强风一直坚持到最后一杆进洞。
你是不是也和笔者一样频频点头，这个学生真不错——热爱运动、信守、坚持不懈。
Dana一语惊醒梦中人，“你是在开玩笑吗？这个学生是在打高尔夫球阿！”
同样地，很多在美国念高中的中国学生，会选择写自己刚去美国念高中时那段艰辛时光。因为语言障碍、文化差异，小留学生如何一步步适应美国的文化，蜕变成不仅品学兼优，而且上课积极发言的好学生。
且不说选择这个话题的学生多如牛毛，你无法体现自身的特点。绝大多数的在美国上高中的中国学生都是在私立学校上学，所以你在描述所谓的“逆境”之前，先想想自己每年交的学费是多少好吗？
还有一次，斯坦福的前招生官Aidan讲到一篇文章中，一个学生在写他参加_野营项目，生病发烧。第一次远离父母的他，为了团队的荣誉，还是努力咬牙不让自己拖累整个团队。而事实上Aidan在看到这个野营项目名称的时候，就已经非常熟悉这个项目，包括这个项目的高昂价码。你所谓的克服挑战，在招生官眼里不过是娇生惯养的富二代，初次接触这个世界上大多数人无时不刻都在面临的困难。

千万别到最后只是感动了自己，千万别把体现自己奉献服务精神，写成了“秀优越”。
招生官阅读一份申请材料的时间非常有限，你如果不能确保他在浏览你申请文书的时候，每一个词都打动他的心；也不要让你的文章，看到开头就能想到结尾。
以上，只是从选题的角度，告诉大家尽量避免的题材。当然不排除有学生能把非常陈旧的话题写出自己的新意。但如果你没有能力把淘宝爆款穿得清新脱俗，就不要凑这个热闹啦！

My determination to study engineering comes from my desire to seek a challenge. In life, there seems to be no bigger challenge than to learn and find out how things work. As my year 12 progressed, my interest in science and Maths, particularly Physics developed. Studying Physics at Advanced level allows me to think about how things move and react to forces and how these properties can be used in solving both practical and theoretical situations. Maths interests me as it develops my problem solving skills, allowing me to apply familiar concepts to unfamiliar situations. My enthusiasm towards these subjects encouraged me to take up AS Further Maths. In doing so, I hope to expand my knowledge to achieve a level of understanding satisfactory to a potential degree level student. In addition to Physics and Maths, I am also studying Biology which provides me with the opportunity to develop my practical skills as I am required to work within groups. My communication skills have been put to the test during these lessons and I have proved many times that I am a team player.
After much research, I decided to attend taster courses at City University and Queen Mary University of London to experience what engineering involves. These informative taster courses offered me a unique chance to understand and to observe different areas of engineering which subsequently led me to the decision to pursue mechanical engineering. Its ability to allow me to see how things work fascinates me and furthermore, as mechanical engineering is a diverse field, it will allow me to learn and use many skills which can be transferred onto many employment opportunities.
Although I have enjoyed the challenge that my school-based work has given me, I have always sought to extend my knowledge. Recently, I built a computer. I discovered how each component is connected and how one energy source is converted into another. This has allowed me to apply the theory I learn within the curriculum to real situations. Furthermore, I was able to see how the components fit together by taking apart unwanted pieces from my old computer.
I have always been willing to give my time to take part in activities such as volunteering. I once raised money for the Marie Curie foundation. During this period, I improved my communication skills and confidence as I met and talked to many members of the community. I found that this experience was rewarding and fulfilling. I am a trusted member of my year group and when asked to be an ambassador for my sixth form, I accepted. This experience allowed me to demonstrate my organisation and communicational skills as I was required to confidently guide and talk to many potential students to the college. In addition, throughout my academic career, I have played an active role in a variety of different extracurricular activities. I am an adept musician and passed my grade 4 examinations in flute. Although I have decided to discontinue the examinations, every year during events such as Chinese New Year, I play the flute for my local Chinese community.
I believe that success as an engineer in a modern society requires a combination of management, communication and business skills. Therefore, with my previous experiences, focused attitude and will for success, I have the ability and motivation to meet the demands of studying at degree level.
